What gets people
Bikes in Central Park
About 22 walkers a year are hit on the loop drives. Cross at marked crosswalks, raise a hand, and assume a downhill cyclist will not stop.
Turning cars
Two thirds of serious pedestrian crashes happen at intersections, and a third of the victims had the signal. Look over your shoulder for the left turn. Treat a bike lane as a second road.
Phone snatches
By e-bike, from the bike-lane side, while you text at the kerb. Turn on Stolen Device Protection and Find My beforehand. Keep a card in a different pocket.
Ticket touts
Vests at the Battery sell harbour cruises as Statue tickets and sell the free ferry. Castle Clinton is the only ticket window.
Crime data from the NYPD: robbery is down this year in every precinct on the line. Inwood Hill Park recorded no major crimes last quarter; Washington Square Park recorded twenty, mostly at night. The one Inwood caution is walking an empty wooded trail alone at 8 am, which is why the parks route uses the paved road.
Feet, water, salt
- Shoes: cushioned road running shoes, half a size up, worn on an 8 to 10 mile walk beforehand. Nothing new on the day.
- Socks: synthetic or wool. Not cotton.
- Tape: Leukotape or paper tape on known hot spots before you start and again at the halfway point. Walkers report the hot spot at mile 8 and the blister at mile 10.
- Water: drink to thirst and eat something salty every two hours. Over-drinking plain water across a long slow day is the real risk. The one dry stretch is Fort Washington Ave to Edgecombe Ave.
- Painkillers: paracetamol. Not ibuprofen on a long walk.
- Beer: one with food. Two costs the last five miles.
Stop if
- Confusion, slurred speech, or hot dry skin. Call 911.
- Chest pain, or pain into the arm or jaw. Call 911.
- Headache with nausea and puffy hands after hours of drinking water. Eat salt and get seen.
- A joint that swells, a torn bleeding blister, or any fall with head impact.
- Central Park south of the Reservoir would be walked in the dark.
- You see a kangaroo.
Every point on the route is within 15 minutes of a subway. 24-hour emergency rooms are at 220th, 168th, 114th, 59th, 13th and William St.
Rain or heat
A rain chance above 60 percent, or a high above 29 °C, means move the day or switch to the Broadway or Fifth Avenue route. The Plan tab applies this rule to the live forecast. The A train shadows every route if you need to hop.
